| Magnetic Compass | 10 sp | This is a magnetized needle on a spindle in a small wooden box with brass fittings. It is an important piece of navigational equipment or seagoing vessels. The magnetic needle loses its magnetism and must be re-magnetized with a lodestone every few days. |
| Lead Sheet | 60 sp | Lead sheeting is used to patch leaks in the hull of the ship on the inside. It is purchased in 50kg rolls and then cut into small pieces called “tingles” as needed to patch the hull. Each tingle is nailed into place with tingle nails. Tingle sheets are used in conjunction with oakum, pitch and tar to patch leaks and keep the hull water tight. They are a “temporary fix” until hull boards can be replaced during a refit in a shipyard. |
| Lodestone | 72 sp | A lodestone is a naturally occuring magnetic stone. It can be used to magnetize other pieces of iron and is typically used to magnetize the needle in a magnetic compass. The standard lodestone used on ships is 500 grams and about the size of a large chicken egg. |
| Pitch | 8 sp | In combination with oakum, pitch is used for caulking seams and packing joints to stop leaks and create a waterproof seal. Sold in small barrel weighing 10kg. |
| Oakum | 10 sp | Oakum is loose fibers from unwound old rope. Used for patching leaks in conjunction with pitch and tar. Sold in hemp canvas bags weighing 10kg. |
| Oars | 10 sp | A pair of wooden long oars. They are 3m long and each oar weighs 8 kg. |
| Sounding Lead and Line | 1 sp | A large heavy lead weight which is attached to a 40 meter long hemp line. It is lowered into the water to find the depth to the bottom. Used to help a ship navigate shallow waters. |
| Tar | 5 sp | Thick, black viscous liquid used for waterproofing and sealing. Sold in small barrel weighing 10kg. |
| Tingle Nails | 20 sp | Tingle nails are sold by the thousand. A bag of 1000 iron tingle nails weighs about 10kg and costs 20 sp. Used in conjunction with tingles (lead sheets) to patch leaks in the hull. |
